In 1865, Major General George Armstrong Custer purchased a rifle from Capt. Yeager and he used it to kill Sitting Bull at Battle of Little Bighorn. This event is considered the beginning of American firearm culture. In 1876, Captain Yeager sold his business to Mr. Ladd and his son John Ladd became the first owner of The Old National Rifle Store (later called The Barnes & Noble). From then on, rifles were available for purchase from The Barnes & Noble shop until 1973 when it closed its doors due to financial difficulties. When war ended and these camps closed down in 1945, much of the local economy was destroyed as most of the jobs that had been given to German Americans evaporated because no new companies had come online to create jobs like they had done during wartime with American citizens who could still speak their native language fluently. Afterward many people decided not to return to Bloomington because their memories of those times were so difficult to shake off
