In 1846s Mennonite settlers arrived in large numbers in central Indiana after being driven out of Pennsylvania by religious persecution; they called their new community "Mennonite Village". In 1860, Indianapolis moved from its original location north of Fort Wayne to become an independent city; Bloomington followed suit two years later. By 1870, both cities were growing rapidly but lacked proper infrastructure or services that would make them competitive with larger counterparts such as Indianapolis or Chicago. That changed when Ohio Senator Joseph Ralston allocated $50,000 towards building a public works program that would include streetscape improvements throughout the region including new bridges over rivers and improved water systems. This marked the beginning of what would be known as "The Great Bloomington Renaissance." During this time period, many top professionals started their own businesses in town such as banker Daniel Webster Carlin (founder & CEO/president of Bankers Trust), industrialist Andrew Carnegie (founder & CEO/president multiple steel companies), lawyer George Simpson (the first African American lawyer admitted to practice law in Indiana), architects Jens Seibert and Edward Hopper (co-authors & winners of an architecture award presented by President Abraham Lincoln). One particular development during this time period was the opening of Purdue University into an agricultural school affiliated with local mill owner James Boren; this led to increased economic opportunities for students and townspeople alike who could now afford higher education instead of working their way up through society like previous generations had done. Many factors contributed to The Great Bloomington Renaissance: advances made in technology such as powered streetlights and radios which allowed people more access to information; increasing social mobility thanks to advances like women getting married without dowries or having children taken away upon marriage; suburbanization caused by developers buying up rural land around major cities for housing developments while failing to provide similar type amenities or services within these towns which eventually resulted in riots across these regions dubbed "The Great Migration".
