Bloomington was founded on December 14, 1824 by General George Rogers Clark and his forces as a military outpost on the east bank of River Wabash after they had won an engagement against Native Americans in November 1823. At first it was called "New Albany" because its founders were from New Albany, Ohio. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 had become an incorporated city with a population of 22,000 people. On May 1, 1847, Bloomington became the capital of Indiana after being selected as the site for this new state from several other proposals. In 1861, when Indianapolis was moved to central Indiana to be closer to federal troops during the American Civil War (the war broke out two years later), Bloomington lost its status as capital but continued to be an important center for government and commerce until it merged with Indianapolis in 1968. After merging with Indianapolis proper—a process that took place over three days beginning on April 27—Bloomington became part of newly created Metropolitan Indianapolis Area (MIA). During World War II there were many factories in and around Bloomington that produced munitions used in fighting across Europe and North Africa; these plants closed or went out of business after 1945 due to competition from better-equipped postwar countries and advances in technology. However, much economic activity still takes place today within downtown Bloomington thanks to its large concentration of colleges and universities: IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University Carbondale), UST (University School USA), Loyola Marymount University (Marymount College), Ball State University (Ball State University–Lacrosse Field), IU Health System's Wexford Campus Medical Center, among others
