The first firearms in Bloomington were simple muzzleloaders made from tree branches and other materials. By 1794, there were two handguns being made in town: one was by John Caldwell and the other by Nicholas Kirkland. The first pistols were generallymade with five rounds of 7-shot ammunition each. By 1800, there had become several gunsmiths in town and pistols became more complex with 11-round revolvers being produced. From 1802 to 1839, four different armories were built in Bloomington: two for the military and two for use by civilians. By 1865, manufacturing had moved out of town altogether to nearby Indianapolis due to competition from American Arms Corporation which was founded in that year by George Wickersham Sr., a well-known entrepreneur in Indianapolis. American Arms Corporation was later renamed Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company after its founder’s death in 1896. In 1907–08, Bloomingtons first high school replaced what was then known as “The Old High School” on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets which had served as both a primary and secondary school since 1835 for students living east of Indianapolis off State Road 16 north (now US-25) and west of State Road 21 south (now I-465). At that time there were only two high schools in Indiana: IUPUI (in downtown Indianapolis) and Dearborn Heights High School also located east side off SR 16/21 between Dearborn Heights Boulevard & First Street North (later Orchard Boulevard). In 1912–13 construction began on what would become IUPUIs first football stadium which opened September 8th 1913 named Memorial Stadium after Trustee Drury Jenson who contributed $5,000 towards its construction along with other donors like Mrs Prentice & Mr Wirtz etc., making that now one of America's oldest college stadiums still playing football today with over 52 years! IUPUI moved their campus from MyCenter into Memorial Stadium starting fall semester 2018 after much anticipation from students & staff alike!

It grew rapidly after the discovery of oil and gas reserves in the Indiana countryside, and by 1900 it had a population of over 100,000. In 1912, Bloomington became one of the first cities in the United States to have a municipal government with a directly elected mayor. The city also began to build public housing projects as part of its urban renewal program during this time.
