Bloomington, Indiana is a city located in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of St. Joseph County. The population was 21,898 as of 2018, making it part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Bloomington is one of the largest cities in Indiana and one of its most populous counties with over 60% (2018) suburban growth. Bloomington is also home to Purdue University and Butler University, two universities with world-renowned programs in engineering, business, law, medicine, and health sciences respectively. The first inhabitants of what is now Bloomington were Native Americans who lived on the Monson Ridge area near present day Westfield and New Albany before moving downriver to form at least three villages: Big bonanza off Old National Road; Pecan Grove on White River; and Grand Traverse on Menasha Creek. It wasn’t until after European exploration arrived that Europeans began traveling through this area which included today’s Bloomington region in 1795 when French traders founded a post at Fort Dearborn along the west bank of White River just below present day Southbridge Street/High Street intersection. The first settler in what would become Bloomington was John Fremont who arrived there from Michigan Territory in 1837 during an effort to find new land for his investors following their purchase of 4 million acres (20 km2) around Indianapolis from King George III via Treaty #1). He named his new settlement after Philadelphia merchant James Kahlil Gibbons – then president of Syria – who had offered him help finding land east of Indianapolis due to concerns about Indian attacks against settlers living near Fort Dearborn (Kahlil Gibbons 1797-1867). Kahlil Gibbons had unsuccessfully tried colonization bids for what is now southwestern Indiana via packets sent back East by missionaries including David Whitmer while he was stationed at Fort Wayne under General Anthony Wayne between 1812-1814 as part-of an American army force invading Canada during the War Of 1812 free from British control.). After arriving here circa 1837 Fremont surveyed much or all present day Bloomington Township site which he purchased from United States Army Colonel John Miller for $100 per acre ($4 per km²). This parcel extended southward adjacent to current day Northside Drive/White River Boulevard east beyond today’s Purdue University campus extending into eastern St Joseph County including parts or all today's north side suburbs including Noblesville subject to surrounding unincorporated communities within that township as well as Clearwater Beach northwest cornering said township line across White River just east past present day North High School property lines thenceforth crossing said river concurrent with US Highway 12 & I-465 running concurrently thru town center forming northeast edge & northeastern boundary thereof adjoining Present Day Saint Joe Hospital facility built adjacent thereto 1975.) Fremont built several homes here including The Swampygnuks – now known as Old Main – located on First Street NE currently occupied by Purdue University's Memorial Union building where students meet each morning prior to classes beginning; The Hermitage – also known as The Hermitage House – located at 300 S genessee Avenue which served as both his residence and office; Freemasons Hall next door (now called “Dormitories 1&2”), used by local masons for social purposes before becoming a schoolhouse later still sporting Masonic symbols throughout throughout inside & out formerly belonging to Notre Dame de Lorette convent attached heretofore renowned Female Seminary OFI offering theological education preparatory thereto since 1796 & subsequently Mrs Edwards' Chapel also extant nearby been dedicated therein 1935; finally Mr Miller donated lands southwest cornering First Street NE -Old National Road - bordering Clearwater Beach -Collins Place -concurrent with I-465 just east side Whiteside Drive property lines thenceforth entering town center along same grid pattern remaining until reaching Wabash Avenue hereinbelow marked accordingly); these original structures remain among |today| most commonly observed architecture within City limits even though alterations/additions followed subsequent decades resulting In significant loss or destruction thereof over time [see accompanying map].
