Bloomington, Indiana is a town in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Porter County. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first store in Bloomington opened on Main Street on January 10, 1830 under sign "Jenny's Coffee House". From 1830-1851, Bloomington had two newspapers: "The Republican" and "The Democratic Review". In 1851-1855, both papers were combined into one publication called "The Herald." The first post office in Bloomington was established on December 3, 1826; it was renamed to "Bloomingdale" after local trader James Bloomfield bought an estate there in 1827. In 1865-1868, Blountsburg was merged into Bloomington and became its second town center after Fort Wayne's growth outpaced that of nearby Blountsburg which experienced only modest growth until 1840s owing to lack of transportation options available through those days outside Fort Wayne proper). In 1870-1871, Blountsburg developed into what is now known as downtown or Old Town while parts of present day Porter County were annexed into Blountsburg during this time period (the present day South side streets between Third Street and Fourth Street were laid out during this time period). During the American Civil War (1861–1865), Indianapolis served as Confederate capitol until November 10th when Union General Sterling Price placed an end to that campaign at Fortieth Ward Bridge over White River near present day downtown Indianapolis after three days conducting operations there using 30000 men including 800 cavalrymen supported by artillery fire from nearby Fort Harrison barracks. On October 9th 1865 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 6673 which ordered all Freedmen to leave Kentucky for North Carolina within seven days unless they could be registered with local authorities; this order established control over black Migration into Indiana during Reconstruction Era in America following Civil War.
