Beech Grove, Indiana is a small city in northern Indianpolis County, Indiana. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beech Grove was founded in 1871 by settlers from Maryland and Virginia. The original town site was on land that now includes Beech Grove Village and the Beech Grove Cemetery. The first settler in what would become Beech Grove Township was John Hargrave, who arrived in 1851. By 1870, there were six families living in Beech Grove Township: Herrick, Aldridge, Allred, Baldwin, English and Rankin. In 1871 the community of Beech Grove (now known as Villa Park) was platted by George Washington Cook and Arthur Payson White with assistance from Jno Cockerill of Terre Haute. Cook named the new settlement for General James Earl von Steuben though it is more likely that he simply wanted to honor General von Stein's role as commander of United States forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1881 David Rankin built a sawmill on Mill Creek which became one of the largest operations in town until it closed its doors in 1945 due to World War II shortages of wood pulp products. Rankin also operated a flour mill adjacent to his mill property until 1958 when it closed as well due to economic problems associated with post-war inflationary times. During most of its early years Beech Grove had no school; parents used to send their children off to Terre Haute or other nearby towns for education while they worked their farms or took care of their own homes and businesses. When TerreHaute Consolidated High School opened in 1903 Beechgrove citizens attended classes together although each family continued to operate its own farmsteads until about 1920 when all farmers began moving into schools for their children - this change helped pave the way for later suburban development around Villa Park and parts eastward including present day Plainfield Township In 1912 Orville Fenton moved his bakery from Geneseo to open a bakery here also becoming one of area's earliest restaurant operators In 1916 Lillian Rankin married Orville Fenton's son Harry Jr., setting off another series of familyowned businesses including those involved with grocery stores (the Rankins ran two), transportation (the Rankins owned several enterprisesinvolved with busing students home from school), real estate (Harry Sr.'s father had started an empire selling parcelsized land developments called "Quartermills"), manufacturing (Orville Jr.'s brothers started a plastics company which became JVC) and even professional sports sponsorship beginning with basketball games played here during Vitale/Rankin Years before it reached Illinoisappa levels some 20 years later . In 1957 Orville Fenton passed away leaving behind three daughters - Lois Gentry Fenton Lurie who managed business affairs until her husband's death in 1984; Barbara Fenton Day who continues day-to-day operations;and Judy Agerter who has taken over management since MrsFenton Day retired fifteen years ago .....In 1982 Town Manager Don Kapp donatedland’s old high school building adjacent to Villa Park Mall campus so that local high school students could have their graduation ceremonies conducted there insteadof at Prairie View A&M University.....Many aspectsoftoday’sVillage originated during earlier decades whenBeechGrovewasjusta smalltownhometo dozensOFfamilies..
Beech Grove was founded in 1819 by Captain John Beech and his wife, Sarah. The Beech family operated a ferry service between the town of Terre Haute and Beech Grove for many years before selling their business to the trustees of the Indiana State Library in 1935. The library continued to operate as a beehive until it closed its doors in 1984. The first post office at Beech Grove was established on November 5, 1820, and served as the village's only facility until1834 when a second post office was opened. The first settler to arrive in what is now Beech Grove was Capt John Beech who arrived with his family from Terre Haute on October 15, 1819. In 1824 Capt John and his son Daniel built a log cabin on the present site of the village which became their home for several years. They also raised crops and raised pigs there for meat during this time. In 1830 Capt John sold his land within the limits of what is now Beech Grove to Isaac Gillett for $600 Gillett developed an early lumber industry in nearby Lafayette where he did much work building construction over time including three Masonic lodges (the first two were built by him). After Abraham Lincoln’s election as President, Gillett decided that Indiana needed more coal so he left Lafayette for Monmouth County, New Jersey to look for coal because he could not find any while living in Indiana. He never returned home again after leaving Illinois He died there in 1865 at age 83* (*It has been reported that Gillett may have reached 100 years old.) Lt Col Abraham Lincoln remembered Gillett fondly when he visited Indianapolis following his inauguration as President: “I saw General Gillett here some weeks ago;he looked very feeble but very vigorous – I believe he has lived about 80 years." After Lt Col Abraham Lincoln's death on April 12th 1865 , His widow Mary Todd Lincoln ordered all military honors be paid unto her husband's body "in spite of objections" due to her grief at losing him so soon after he took office
