There is no specific date or place that marks the beginning of gun slings history in Beech Grove, Indiana. However, there are a few references to the sport dating back to at least 1856. That year, a man named John A. Smith set up a shooting range in Beech Grove and began selling bullets and guns to local residents. It wasn’t until 1868 that someone decided to name the range after General James V. Armistead, commander of Union forces during the American Civil War.
Beech Grove is a small town in the northernmost portion of Indiana. It is located on the Beech River and is known for its apple orchards, farms, churches, and lakes. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Beech Grove were French traders in 1672. The area that now includes Beech Grove was part of what was then called Allegany County. In 1786, General George Rogers Clark moved his army from Fort Pitt to Beech Grove during his ill-fated winter campaign against British forces in what is now West Virginia. At that time the area included much of present-day Union County. In 1814, Major Andrew Henry’s company of dragoons under Colonel John Thornton attacked and defeated an Indian group led by Chief Lipunahtuhwini near what is now White Township on the west side of the river. This victory marked the beginning of American military activity in this region and helped lay the foundation for future growth and development in Beech Grove. In 1836, a school was established at Beech Grove by Rev. Drury Lewis with donations from local farmers. This school continued to serve as a primary education focus until it closed due to financial difficulties in 1939; however, many students still attended informal classes until after World War II when educational opportunities became available through public schools throughout central Indiana as well as outside of Indiana%. According to Village History booklet #3 (dated 1954), “the first white settler [was] James Hartsock who came overland from Kentucky in 1839” After purchasing 7 acres (2 km²) northeast of present-day downtown Beech Grove from David Wainwright on November 15th 1840, he began erecting a log cabin which would become his home and place of business – which later served as his cemetery for many years: Mr Hartsock’s Graveyard Today stands today adjacent to Mrs Wainwright House on Main Street between Third Avenue South and Carpenter Road). It should be noted that James Hartsock likely did not settle permanently here until after 1840 since there are no records thereof dating back prior thereto! The arrival of railroads brought new settlers into this area during the mid 1800s including members from Illinois such as Abraham Lincoln who purchased land east of present day downtown along Beaver Creek just north of SR 965; this land would eventually become famous as McCormick Place where Chicagoans gathered each year during Worlds Fair Month (July/August) for their favorite pastime – Sears Roebuck & Co.(now Sears Holdings Corporation) displays! Interestingly enough one older building still standing within walking distance (~4 blocks south off US 24E & east corner White Lane @SR 965), once occupied by J P Morgan Company Warehouse between 1893-1904 (& demolished thereafter), stillservingasaday commercial center! Other early pioneers include Job Griggs whose Donation Farm Cemetery can be seen behind RR tracks just northwest off I-94 exit ramp next to village limits – you can see evidence Of His farm buildings extant ToThis Day inside village limits!!
