He also started a agricultural experiment station here on his farm which he named Wertheim-Harker Experimental Farm (now known as Purdue University). This institution produced many important advances in agriculture including corn seed production and soil technolobyte development used today in many major crops worldwide. The first post office was established at Beech Grove in 1872; it closed when it changed its name to Westfield in 1907. The present post office building was built around 1912 and has been functioning continuously ever since. Beach Grove had two primary businesses until the 1970s: pneumatic manufacturing plants for various products such as rubber tires and automotive parts, which provided jobs for locals during their peak years; and a grocery store/mini mart operated by Mrs. Lillian Kappes until her death in 1978 which then became an appliance store called "Kapp's". After Kapp's death, local residents developed another business - Coolidge's Hardware - which opened its doors following a fundraiser event organized by Mrs."Mrs."Lillian Kappes' great granddaughter Debbie Coolidge Toolette." Debbie Coolidge Toolette later served as Mayor of Beach Grove from 2001 to 2006

Beech Grove is a small town in Union Township, Kane County, Indiana. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Knoxboro metropolitan area. The first settler in Beech Grove was Nicholas Jansen who arrived in 1814. In 1826, John Crouch settled here and built his home on the present site of Beech Grove Elementary School. He and his wife were the first residents to own land in Beech Grove. The Crouch's tenement building still stands on North Main Street near what is now Beech Grove Middle School; it served as a grocery store from its construction until 1957. In 1849, Michael Jansen settled here with his family and began growing corn for marketplaces throughout central Indiana. By 1860, he had erected two frame buildings on what are now North Main and South streets - one for himself and one for his wife and six children. In 1861-1862, Michael Jansen donated land to the town to build a schoolhouse; upon completion of the schoolhouse, he became an honorary member of the Board of Trustees. In 1863-1864 Lewis Bogue came to Beech Grove from Decatur County, Illinois (then part of Chicago), bringing with him 600 acres (2 km²) of rolling farmland that he bought from Nicholas Jansen for $1 per acre ($/km²). Bogue farmed this land until 1896 when it was sold to David Ahern who leased it back to Lewis Bogue Jr., thereby holding title to over 500 acres (2 km²) that formed much of Beech Grove today. Bogue Boulevard still travels through Beech Grove; it honors Lewis Bogue Jr.'s memory by designation as "Lewis Bogue Boulevard." At about this time many farms were abandoned due to consolidation among various farmers during the late 1800s which left behind large areas undeveloped orilled by human activity save occasional crop failures caused by natural disasters such as floods or freezes which impacted adjacent communities nearby
