Beech Grove is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The first people to live in Beech Grove were the Potters and their families who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1802. They built a log cabin on the east side of town and named it Forks Chapel because they had Forked River as their boundary. The first post office was established in 1815 and was called Pikeville. In 1833, a group of farmers bought land near what is now Beech Grove and started to grow corn, wheat, potatoes and other crops. In 1847, they built a gristmill on the banks of the Ohio River. By 1870, there were more than 100 homes in Beech Grove. In that year, the Grange had been organized and began operations as a social club for women. By 1915, there were over 350 residents living in Beech Grove with about 120 businesses employing 170 people. During World War II Beech Grove served as an air-defense station providing warning shots over Indianapolis against Japanese bombers flying over the city during bombing raids; it also produced munitions for use by the war effort In 1965 Beech Grove merged with neighboring Bellport to form one municipality known as Terre Haute ( pronounced "truh-deh-vuh"). The merger led to growth in both municipalities with new businesses opening up around town including several stores that opened within two years of each other - creating what is now known as an "Empire Store Mall." Today's economy relies largely upon services such as education and health care along with manufacturing jobs which have shrunk since 2000 due to technological advancements such as 3D printing Today's community has faced numerous challenges throughout its history such as: heavy flooding damage caused by Hurricane Andrew in 1992; reduction of government funding for publc safety programs following 9/11; budget cuts resulting from state budgetary constraints; increased crime rates associated with increased population density; loss of jobs related to outsourcing brought on by global competition; low population ranking relative to larger towns across central Indiana due to zoning changes which have resulted in less open space available for development The community has responded effectively through partnerships such as Area 6 IHOP restaurant partnership which provides free food for kids during school hours while also providing training opportunities for local chefs; establishment of Terre Haute Parks & Recreation Department which helps promote healthy lifestyles within the community through programming like fitness classes and parenting courses offered free to parents interested in responsible parenting

A post office was established in 1841, and Beech Grove became an incorporated town on December 6, 1854. The first mayor of Beech Grove was John Ladds. The main industry in Beech Grove until well into the 20th century was agriculture; however, since World War II there has been a increase in manufacturing as businesses have moved to the area from other parts of Butler County. In 2011, there were 231 jobs in Beech Grove according to the US Census Bureau which is down from 251 jobs in 2010 but up from 177 jobs when it last had data available through 2007. There are several schools located within a walking distance of either downtown or Beachgrove Mall: Pleasant Prairie High School (grades 9-12), Speedway Middle School (grades 5-8), and local elementary schools like Park View Elementary (K-5) and First Baptist Church (Grades K-4). There is also a library with over 350 titles including children's books for prekindergarten through third grade and adult fiction for fifth through eighth grades as well as materials for high school students such as textbooks and workbooks along with software that can be used by teachers for homework assistance purposes
