Beech Grove is a village in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 522 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beech Grove was platted on July 12, 1854, by J.H. Beech and Wm.F. Bemis.[1] The first post office in Beech Grove was established on October 4, 1857, and was known as Highland Park until it changed its name to Beech Grove on February 1, 1865.[2] The community got its name from beech trees that lined the streets leading to it at the time of its founding. The first settler in Beech Grove were two men named John Fenton and James Dutton who arrived in March 1854 with their families from Whitley Township (now Franklin County).[3] On November 8, 1881,[4] a fire destroyed most of the town center including all of the churches and schools within one week[5][6]. A new town hall/library/commerce building was erected soon afterward but due to an unknown cause it burned down on December 3rd 1889 again[7]. On January 7th 1893 a group of five men led by H C Potter built a small frame schoolhouse just east of Main Street which served as both public school and meeting place for local farmers before being moved to South Bend later that year when that city started having schools[8], This small schoolhouse remains standing today across from Interstate 465 near mile marker 231 (accessed via exit I-465) in neighboring Westville Township
