Beech Grove is a small town located in southwestern Indiana. Beech Grove was founded in 1828, and the population of the town increased to over 1,000 by 1860. The first post office was established in 1834. The town had two newspapers, the "Beech Grove Herald" and the "Beech Grove Republican". In 1945, Beech Grove became one of ninety-six towns in the United States that were destroyed by Hiroshima during World War II. Beech Grove is a small town in the state of Indiana. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is located in Hendricks County. The first settler in Beech Grove was John Beech who arrived in 1814. He and his family are buried in a graveyard on the corner of Main Street and Elmwood Drive. The first school was built in 1820 and named for Dr. Isaac Prentice (1797-1868). In 1827, Rev. George Cranch established a Methodistchurch here which remained until it merged with another congregation to form First Presbyterian Church in 1888. Beech Grove is one of only two townships remaining within Hendricks County that were settled before the American Civil War began; the other is Gary. In 1861, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest called his headquarters at this location and several thousand men assembled here to resist Union forces advancing towards Indianapolis from Kentucky while they were besieging Fort Donelson near Nashville, Tennessee. After Forrest's defeat at Fort Donelson, he retreated to nearby Evansville where he eventually surrendered to Union General Ulysses S Grant on April 12, 1865. The post office here has been open since 1837; it consolidated with neighboring communities Beech Grove Township (1838) and Peoria Township (1860) under one postal name beginning November 1st of each year until 1954 when separate USPS districts were created within each county for mail service purposes without affecting post offices within their boundaries- an arrangement that continued even after Indiana became a state in 1912 . In 1922, Beech Grove Elementary School became part of what would become Peoria Public Schools serving both Hendricks County as well as portions of Burbank Township including those parts north of I-465 which formed Wabash Community School District No 2 following local option referendum passed by voters on November 3rd . On May 14th 1966 due to budget cuts by then Superintendent Homer Ladd allbeta high school closed effective June 5th & replaced by new high school building completed September 8th 1972 now known as Mays Landing High School

Beech Grove has a long and diverse history with many events and people that have had an impact on the community today. Some highlights include: -The first anti-slavery meeting in Indiana took place here on April 2nd of 1850 -Sherman's March through Butler County in 1865 led to great bloodshed between native Americans and white settlers -The opening of Parnell Drugs in 1927 brought many new residents to the area who would play an important role in developing the downtown business district that still exists today -The establishment of Grissom Air Force Base led to growth within Beech Grove as well as other nearby towns during World War II -In recent years there have been multiple expansions within the city limits which has resulted in more traffic congestion and increased expenses for taxpayers
