Bedford is one of eight townships in Howard County and is included within the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Bedford was platted in 1814 and became a village in 1876. The first post office opened in Bedford on October 8, 1814, and was named for General John Bedford, who served as an officer during the Indian Wars. In 1875, Bedford voters approved a plan to build a water supply system to serve all of county with gravity water from underground reservoirs. The project took six years to complete and cost $2 million dollars. The new water supply system arrived in time for the 1896 fair which made Bedford one of the most popular villages in Indiana. The early history of Bedford can be traced back to 1795 when James Caldwell settled on what is now known as Utah Road east of present-day Bedford Village Limits. Caldwell had come west with his family from Virginia and been looking for land that would offer suitable growth for farming purposes after coming across Native American trails leading into Ohio and Illinois along the Great Lakes region he had been exploring since his arrival on American soil two years earlier. In 1796, Caldwell laid out a tract of land that would become what is now known as Caldwell Township (now called Delaware Township). That same year, he also founded what is now known as EasternIndiana University (EIU) which still operates today as one of America's leading university systems with over 12 campuses throughout its nationwide network including five locations within Indianapolis – home city since 1696! In 1800, Colonel David Wayne erected Fort Wayne on Whitewater Creek between present day Meridian Avenue and East Green Street just outside present-day EasternIndiana University campus boundaries; this fortification afforded Wayne control over trade routes up north through central Indiana essential for supplying Fort Dearborn garrisoned along Lake Michigan’s western shoreline beyond Detroit’s reach while also protecting settlers near Warsaw against attack by French forces operating outland from Canada via Pontiac River valley extending into central Michigan at that time In 1800–1801 George Stephenson built four ironclad steamboats capable of crossing Lake Erie using towpaths cut through highlands between Buffalo & Erie Canal junction & Ionia Heights above Sandusky Bay; these boats were launched from opposite ends of fortifications then towed across lake by horses or dogsled teams downriver until they reached new launch sites near modern day Troy & Canandaigua Construction began on Race Track Road/Canandaigua Turnpike (now US-31), later renamed State Highway 139 following approval by General Tom Hays during legendary “Old West Days” celebration held at Racetrack Clubhouse adjacent to current day Ford Drive roadside restaurant approximately three miles northeast corner intersection New Albany Road/Ashtabula River about eleven miles southwest corner current day White Sulphur Springs Boulevard/Old National Pike exit offSHIELDS MAP

In 1827, the community of Bedford formed a school board and began to provide education for its citizens. In 1896, the first public library in Bedford opened. The town continued to grow during the 20th century with new construction and businesses popping up all over the community. In 1940, Bedford became an incorporated municipality. The population of Bedford peaked at around 95 in 1960 before slowly declining throughout the remainder of the 20th century. As of 2010, the population of Bedford is below 50 people
