The Bedford scope factory was founded in 1851 by William Bedford and his brother, Isaac. The company manufactured telescopes, binoculars, microscopes, and other scientific equipment. In 1916, the company merged with another manufacturer to become the Bedford-Butterworth telescope company. The Butterworth brothers continued to produce telescopes until their death in 1951. In 1966, the company merged with Scientific American Corporation to form American Optical Company. The American Optical Company produced a wide range of scientific equipment from scopes to medical diagnostics until it went out of business in 1979. Today, the factory remains an important part of the optical industry in Indiana and continues to produce high quality products for consumers around the world.

Bedford is home to the Bedford-Stroudsburg Open Air Museum, which opened in 1984 and contains over 100 different types of artifacts from throughout American history.

Bedford is a small town in eastern Indiana, United States. The population was 1,927 at the 2010 census. Bedford is one of the oldest towns in Indiana and was founded on December 25, 1795 by James Bowie and his family. It became a city on October 15, 1907. The first settlers in what would become Bedford arrived in 1795 when James Bowie and his family moved from Maryland to the area that would later be called Bedford. The area today includes most of Bedford Township including the town center as well as portions of Center Township and Park Township. The first settler in what would become Bedford married Anna Potts on December 25th, 1795 which led to the founding of what would become Bedford. Anna's parents were also pioneers who had come to this area from Maryland about two years prior. In 1802, Russia granted land east of Fort Wayne for a new township to be named after General Anthony Wayne which eventually became Bloomington. However, because noone wanted to move there they changed it back to Bedford on October 15th, 1907 following an effort by Mayor JF Kennedy with help from Congressman HJ McNamara (D-Nowhere). A post office called Bowmanville was established at Bowmanstown near the current town center on November 3rd, 1812 under name of Fort Wayne Post Office but it closed due to lack of mail patronage within 2 months! In 1814 Bowmanville received its own postmastership under name of Greenwood Village until it closed again due to lackadaisical behavior by its postal inspectors! In 1824 Indian Removal began and all vestiges of Native American life were eliminated or transformed into reservations throughout much of central Indiana so when Bowmansville reopened on January 10th for another 5 years it included only white people! Bowmanstown grew rapidly during this time becoming a bustling community with blacksmiths, wagonmakers and merchants selling goods made locally including clothiers such as Mrs John Witherspoon who operated a dye house adjacent to her store that produced "the most beautiful blue chintz everprocured." On July 14th 1830 John Aiken opened up shopkeepers store located at 4 Main Street known as Aiken's Wharf which continued operation until 1908 when it burned down! The building now stands vacant within 100 feet along Third Street across from present day KFC
