Bedford, Indiana is a small town located in the eastern quadrant of Hoosier County, Indiana. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first settler in Bedford was Elijah Ford who came to this area in 1814. The community name may be derived from Bedlington Township, England where he owned land and his family lived. The first post office was established in 1825 and remained open until it closed in 1902. In 1847, Isaac Darby opened a wagon store and blacksmith shop on State Street which became known as "Darby's". By 1860, Bedford had a school and two churches: one Baptist and one Methodist. In 1870, George Wimer built a grist mill on High School Road which became known as "Wimer's". In 1905, the village subdivision of Bedford was organized with a total population of 712 residents. A new high school was built in 1915 by J.M. Easterly for students from Bedford-Clinton Elementary School District No 3 (now Lincoln Central Schools). During World War II when the war effort required large numbers of workers in nearby Indianapolis; Bedford experienced some growth with the addition of an airfield (now Edwards Air Force Base) near town limits that made business possible for many farmers who now had access to trucking services not available before during wartime shortages caused by rationing measures instituted by Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal Coalition government

The town was founded in 1814 by George Washington Bedford and his wife Martha Randolph Bedford. The name comes from Bedford County, England where they were born and raised. George Washington was wounded during the War of 1812 and died two years later; Martha Randolph took over his role as governess to their children. In 1815, General Anthony Wayne invaded India with 5,000 American troops and Battle of Fallen Timbers ensued near what is now downtown Bedford. Some think that this event may have been inspired by General Wayne's experience leading the British military into battle against Native Americans in 1793 when he led an expedition known as "The Battle on Fallen Timbers." After fighting for three days against superior numbers of Indian forces under Chief Miami (or Pawnee), Wayne's force emerged victorious thanks to a strategic location amongst trees which caused them to lose cohesion and morale while under fire from 3 sides; this event became known as "the turning point" in American Indian Wars which continued until after World War II.. After General Wayne's death in 18th century via accident at age 73 some say that she married him because he had mentioned her father-in-lawGeneral Wayne on multiple occasions... George Washington Bedford did not live long enough to see his namesake town founded but he left behind a lasting legacy including being one of its first settlers; he arrived with his family in 1814 from England with just 10 dollars worth of goods! His wife also came over shortly thereafter followed by their four children: John (1797-1868), Mary (1799-1861), Martha (1800-1864)and Gideon (1802-1873). With only basic needs such as food and shelter provided for themboundless opportunities opened up for these early pioneers who began planting corn, wheat, potatoes, beans & other crops along with building homes made from logs or stone! From hereon out life would be filled with hard work & determination like so many others before & after them! They soon started trading goods back & forth with friends across country ensuring there was always something available for their families! This sterling example setter placed himself squarely within the community & helped contribute greatly to its growth even tho' he didn't speak English very well! Over time various businesses sprang up such as two general storesowned by Mr Pendleton (& Mrs Hendrix) which remain icons today; both men were active business owners throughout their lifetimes serving families/community members ENDING UP BEING CHARGED WITH THE ORIGINAL BUSINESS NAME OF BEDFORD STORES WHEN THEIR FAMILY SAYS THEY STOPPED CALLING IT THAT AFTER THEIR OWN FAMILY TAKEN OVER THE BUSINESS IN 1949!!! Ladies rest thy hearte till we come againe !!! Although originally established primarily around farming activities it wasn't until about 1900 when transportation became betteravailable allowing more people outside of rural areas access to education which then allowed new businesses& operations startters such as Laundromat(1901), hardware store(1903), barber shop(1906), restaurant(1907)ANd more!! These days you can find numerous souvenir items boutique\restaurant type places all located downtown currently housing many different types Of shops/entertainment venues etc., making it one busy place to be!! One thing that has not changed however is Main Street running perpendicular throughout mucho evidence reflecting pioneer lifestyles lifestyle choices including horse drawn wagons fullof groceries heading down Main Street past Stables Halleturned house built by Gideon FentonIncluding 3 barns usedbyMr PendletonFORLOOKING OUT FOR HIS HUSBAND WIFE MRS HENDRIX WHO ALSO OPERATED A CATTLE Trailers drove pedestriansmiles away FROMOWNEVERYDAY COMMERCIAL OPTION !!
