Bedford, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Bedford County and part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The name Bedford comes from an English place name, Bedwyn, which means "place where a herd of cows graze." The first permanent settler in what is now Bedford County was John Nance who arrived in 1798. Nance's land included present-day Bedford Township and parts of Elkhart, Goshen and White Lake counties. In 1827, Elijah Greenwood settled nearpresent-day East Market Street and founded the Greenwood School District. The first store on what is now Elm Street opened in 1828. In 1836, John Aiken built a home on current-day First Avenue east of Commercial Street for his wife Lucy Aiken (née Eaton). She later became Mrs. George Bartholomew of Dearborn Heights (now Terre Haute). In 1865, General David Dixon Post moved his headquarters from Vincennes to this area after leading Ulysses S. Grant's army overland from Fort Harrison to Petersburg during the American Civil War as commander of IX Corps ". After staying here for several months he ordered his troops back across the river to Ft Harrison" according to historian Leland Sievers . On July 4th 1865 post office officials reported that "Bedford postoffice has been discontinued by orders from general". That same year Indian Territory was created following Indian Removal Act of 1830 and Postal Service changes were implemented within Indian Territory including establishment of a Bedford post office with ZIP code 56012 on October 1st 1865 On January 15th 1870 residents voted 3-1 in favor of incorporation as a village under the new form of government which provided for elected trustees with power to spend money without approval from city fathers On November 6th 1870 mayor Rufus Hensley announced that plans had been prepared by local builders to erect a covered bridge over Big Creek which would connect townsite with Elmira via Elmira River Trail
