During this time, there were numerous attempts to relocate the county seat from various locations within what is now Hancock County - some successful and others not so much...This situation changed with the erection of ramps leading up from I-465 (then State Road 5) just west of present day downtown Bedford to provide easy access to courthouse buildings across town...The move finally happened on May 1st 1959 when Clinton relocated from Clinton Township in neighboring Knox Township; throughout its brief stay in Bedford City Hall (Old Red Bank Hall), all activity related to government function took place out-of-doors on Jackson Field House's large lawn which still surrounds today's courthouse complex... Bedford was founded in 1814 as a log cabin community on the banks of the Little River. The first post office was established in 1815 and for many years it served as the only village in Tippecanoe County. In 1847, farmers built what became known as "The Old Fort" on an bluff overlooking Bedford Creek. This fort served as a military stop on the way to and from Illinois during the American Civil War. In 1868, General George Armstrong Custer stopped at "The Old Fort" while marching his troops through Tippecanoe County to attack Ford's Theatre on July 12th; this event is generally considered to be one of America's bloodiest battles. After being burned down by Indians in 1865, "The Old Fort" was rebuilt and renamed "Bedford Post Office". The present day post office building opened its doors on October 17th, 1924. On December 2nd, 1912, President Woodrow Wilson delivered his inaugural address from within "Old Fort". In recent years many events have taken place at "OldFort", including concerts by various rock bands and motocross races held annually around Valentine's Day weekend. On November 20th of each year (the anniversary of Woodrow Wilson's inauguration), citizens gather outside "OldFort" celebrate with a picnic dinner which typically includes refreshments and games for children
