Bedford is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and is part of the Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 54,912 as of 2010. It is the county seat of Bedford County and the largest city in that county by population. The first settler in what would become Bedford was Nicholas Flagg in 1795. In 1805, a post office called "Bedford" was established at a place near present-day Burlington on the White River. The town grew quickly and by 1820 had a population of over 130 people. A courthouse and jail were built in 1825 and1829 respectively, becoming one of Indiana's first brick buildings. In 1834, the name changed to "Bedford" because it was recommended to General Harrison by President James Kempton as an appropriate name for a new county seat under his Indian Removal Act leadership campaign promise to relocate all Native Americans living east of the Ohio River to central Illinois’s far western territory (the area now known as Kentucky). In 1835, when William Halleck became governor of Indiana after serving two terms as Secretary at War under Ulysses S Grant, he selected Bedford for his new gubernatorial mansion on Washington Street between Madison Avenue and Dearborn Street (now State Street). On November 3rd 1850 (less than one year after being appointed), he ordered construction began on what would become Indianapolis’s first public hospital – now known as Lucasfilm Corporation’s Star Wars stadium complex – which opened its doors on October 27th 1952
