Bedford is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Bedford County. The population was 33,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. A post office called Bedford was established in 1815, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1925. The town of Bedford was platted in 1827, and became a city on November 3, 1907. The present-day city center was built between 1908 and 1912 following a local referendum vote to approve an incorporation petition by City Council member John Hynes. The original plan called for the new downtown to be anchored by a library, park, theater and other cultural amenities; but these plans were never realized due to financial difficulties experienced during World War I.[1][2] In 1927, Irvington annexed Bedford as part of its own municipal government; however, this annexation did not result in any real growth within either community until after World War II when both communities began cooperating more closely with each other through various joint projects such as education programs and economic development initiatives. The current name honoring General George Washington is first proposed by Mayor John Hudnut on behalf of residents who wanted to honor their ancestor's memory since he died without leaving descendants behind at age 94 years old on October 25th, 2008[3]. On October 9th 2009 general public input session for name change from "Bedford" to "Washington" resulted with over 60% majority favoring changing the name according to source: Bloomington Herald-Star article which quoted Mayor Hudnut as saying that many people feel honored knowing that General Washington's namesake lives within easy reach--namely located just two blocks away from his historic home atop Mount Vernon![4] After much deliberation by City Council members including myself (member at large), we approved renaming our city “Washington” on December 4th 2009 via ordinance #2010-844 replacing “Bedford” with the more accurate spelling “Washington” based upon overwhelming feedback received from citizens throughout ourCity!
