Bedford, Indiana is a small town in the southern Indiana region, located on the border of Lebanon and Posey counties. The town was founded in 1847 by pioneers who came from Kentucky. Bedford has a population of about 4,500 people today. The first settlers to Bedford were farmers who arrived in 1847. They built homes near the present-day intersection of Elm and Washington Streets. The town was named after General George Washington Bedford, an American general who fought in the War of 1812. The first post office was established in 1848 and later renamed for Benjamin Fenton Berry, another early pioneer resident of Bedford. In 1870, cotton merchants John Hargrave and James Cook started trading at what is now the junction of Elm and Washington Streets. In 1872–1873, they built an addition to their business on what is now State Road 519 which became known as Cook's Corner. This store was one of the earliest commercial buildings in Bedford Township. In 1865, Jno Matson opened a grocery store on State Road 519 south of Elm Street that became one of the most popular stores in Bedford Township until it closed its doors in 1984. Matson also operated a blacksmith shop at 425 Elm Street from 1865 to 1969; this shop played an important role during early Bedford Township development because it supplied many of the basic tools needed by settlers for farm work and construction projects ashore (i.e., builder's tape). After developer Wm Ayer purchased land east of Cook's Corner for housing development in 1951, he changed the name given to his project from "Ayertown" to "Bedford." A new elementary school was dedicated within two years following Ayer's purchase of additional property across State Road 519 from banker Julius Beadle Jr.; this building served as both schoolhouse and courthouse until it burned down in 1984 while still used as a community center.]] In 1954–1955, he also constructed another early postwar styled home at 421 Elm Street; this house remains standing today as part Of central square downtown Bedford Village.]] After World War II ended with Victory Over Japan Day on September 2nd 1945 local businesses slowly began closing due to wartime restrictions placed on them such as quotas set by federal government]. All but four small businesses operating within town limits closed between 1946-1970:[one restaurateur converted their restaurant into apartments overnight starting November 3rd 1946]; these closures left locals little choice but to leave or face closure themselves which often led to social unrest [/This lack thereof opportunity caused some residents feel like they were shut out or left behind during much OF our postwar history...]] One exception being Dunham’s Drugstore which continued operations throughout all these years despite tight competition from other local retailers including Bedrock Cafe few storefronts away ].] There are only two remaining establishments that have been open continuously since before postwar prohibition:] Mrs Gilmore’s Bakery & Tea Room which continues operation since 1949],and Joe’s Pizza which has been open since 1953
