Bedford, Indiana is a small town in the northwest corner of the U.S. state ofIndiana. The population was 9,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is located on the southern edge of Evansville, east of Fort Wayne and west of Terre Haute. Bedford was founded in 1817 by Jacob Bedford and his family as a log settlement near what is now Crawfordsville. Bedford Township was organized in 1825, when it split from Hendricks County to form this township. In 1836, all but one inhabitant died in a severe fever called "The Grippe," which swept through central Indiana that year. The remaining residents rebuilt their homes and began farming again with help from local farmers and pioneers who had moved into the area during the 1830s as part of an effort to build a new Indiana capital at Terre Haute. That city never materialized, however, due to financial troubles caused by Indian Wars fought between American settlers and Native Americans; instead, Hazleton became the new capital in 1840 after Battle Creek was destroyed by a tornado seeded by Major General James Kapp's forces during that conflict. The first school in Bedford opened its doors in October 1827; classes were taught by subscription until1839 when free public schools were established under Superintendent Edward Gibbons' supervision . In 1830-31 academic studies for students across India were offered at Fort Wayne's School for Indians which later evolved into Western Illinois University . Bedford, Indiana was founded in 1831 by James Bedford and his brother John. The town was named for General George Washington, who had died in 1799. The city of Bedford was first settled in the early 1800s, but it did not become a permanent community until 1831 when James Bedford and John moved to the area from Terre Haute, Indiana. In that year, the two brothers founded what would become the largest and most populous town in Randolph County. The town quickly became a center for agriculture and industry. The Bedford brothers built an initial stockyard and brewery before expanding their business into other areas such as flour milling, porkpacking, sawmills, and even a foundry. The townsfolk were also successful at hosting agricultural fairs which attracted attention from all over the country. Bedford gradually grew into a sizable city with its own political system and social amenities. By 1915, it had reached 1,500 residents and had developed several major businesses including Machine Works & Foundry Company (MWF), Bridgeport Manufacturing Company (BPC), United States Telephone Service (USTS), Drury-Lambert cigars (later renamed Goudreau cigars), First National Bank of America (FNB), Ford Motor Company plants located along US-27W between Railroad Avenue and Elm Street-and numerous other small businesses. During World War II, Bedford played an important role in providing munitions manufacturing capabilities within Randolph County while alsoocurring some significant military activity nearby including Camp Victory near present day Richmond Heights - home to Fort Wayne's Military Airport - as well as operations at Fort Harrison on White River opposite today's Decatur Township. After the war ended in 1945, many of the old industrial facilities were abandoned or converted into housing developments while others continued to be used for various purposes until they were finally demolished around 1980 when all of Arlington Township took over responsibility for Bedfordtown functions withinRandolph County government once again
