Bedford, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,013 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Bedford" was chosen by Colonel John Bedford in 1795 to commemorate his victory over the French in a battle near the village of Bedford on November 15, 1794. The community began as a log cabin village located on what is now State Road 124 and State Road 158 (later US-24). In 1825, when Lafayette County was organized, Bedford became one of its initial settlements. By 1840, it had developed into a small town with a population of around 100 people. The first post office opened in 1851 and remained open until 1893. In 1870, after settlers had moved into the area from other parts of centralIndiana and eastern Illinois, two residents named Edward Schieffer and George Hargrave founded an agricultural colony called Bellefontaine Farms which included some 40 acres (16 hectares) of land east of what is now Bedford Village on current State Road 158/124A (later Old US 24). This new settlement boasted five large barns and fifteen smaller dwellings built by Schieffer and Hargrave between 1870-75; they also erected six steamboats for transporting agricultural produce to markets in Indianapolis and other towns across central Indiana. After bellefontaine Farms failed to attract enough colonists to continue farming following several years of successful operation, Hargrave sold most or all his holdings to Edward Schieffer in 1887 for $2 million dollars – making him one of the largest landowners in centralIndiana during that time period! Over time many businesses have been established along SB 124A including: Bedrock Pharmacy(1976), various convenience stores including IHOP(1990), Pohl's Pie Place(2002), Wegmans Grocery Store(2005), KFC (2009), etc.; but it is still considered primarily an agricultural center today with much focus on production agriculture such as corn | soybeans | wheat | hay | potatoes

Bedford, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 6,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elkhart County seat and the larger Lafayette, Indiana metropolitan area. The first settler in Bedford was Captain John Ladd who arrived in 1809. He named his new community after himself, Bedford Township (now Bedford), in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. A survey made by George Rogers Clark in 1827 found that there were only six people living in Bedford Township- three men and three women; all other residents were farmers or servants. In 1830, David Hays surveyed land for a post office in what is now Bedford Township and laid out a road on it which became known as Hays Road today. On December 8, 1830 (the date when Washington Territory was organized), he erected an official notice board at what is now Vaughn Street to announce his news of the establishment of this post office: "First Post Office In This Territory." The first settlers had to use Indian paths because they could not travel over the rough mountain top terrain to get to their new posts on the frontier where roads were built later on. They also used personal vehicles which contributed to their early success because it took weeks or even months for goods to reach them at their new locationPioneering transportation technologies such as wagons and carts did not exist until much later when mail service began between major cities like Philadelphia and New York City via steamboats
