Bedford, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 408 at the 2010 census. Bedford is located on the east bank of the White River, about 12 miles (19 km) south of Indianapolis and 30 miles (48 km) north of Fort Wayne. However, due to suburbanization in Indianapolis beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s and a decline in aerospace production after 1988, Bedford's population peaked at 10,000 in 2000 before declining steadily until 2007 when it dropped to 405 residents
Bedford was founded by James Bedford in 1814. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, it had over 100 residents. In 1835, the legislature moved the county seat from Terre Haute to Bedford and the population increased to 300. In 1840, a post office was established in Bedford and soon became an important community for mail delivery. The town also developed a trading center with its own millinery and fabric store. By 1850, Bedford had a population of 1,000 people and began developing into a small city. However, during the American Civil War, Bedford sided with the Union side andentshusiastically contributed to their war effort. After the war ended, Bedford slowly deteriorated as businesses closed and tax revenues decreased. In 1870, the city was annexed by Terre Haute while remaining part of Hamilton County.
