The town of Bedford, Indiana was founded in 1824 by David Butler and John Porter. The town got its name from the Bedford rifle, which was used by the United States Army during the American Revolution.
Bedford is a town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located in the Meridian Township division of Butler County. The population was 5,438 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Bedford Forrest, an American Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War and was posthumously honored with a national monument in Memphis, Tennessee. The first people to live here were Native Americans who founded what is now known as Fort Dearborn on the east side of what is now Bedford Street. The first European to set foot on this site was Pierre Chouteau in 1795 while exploring these parts for fur traders looking for new land to exploit. Founded by General George Rogers Clark during his 1802 visit to this area, Bedford served as Clark's headquarters during his march across Indian Territory from Louisville to Lawrenceburg before his departure for Mexico City two years later. It was not until after war had ended that Bedford became an official courthouse seat and trading post for much of central and southern Indiana when both Fort Dearborn and Logansport were burned down by Federal forces in 1805-06 along with much else near them during the period of Creek Indian Removal. As part of a larger effort led by General Andrew Jackson to quash any resistance against United States occupation following the Mexican-American War, Battle Creek Campaign Royal turned Bedford into a Union stronghold on September 12th 1861 when Union troops under Colonel John Dennison destroyed most of Ford’s Store House which lay at its junction with State Road 3 (present day US 30) just north of present day Elmwood Avenue and east of current day White Street; thus becoming one of only two major Union strongholds remaining south of Indianapolis prior to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation less than one year later on January 1st 1863. Afterward many residents abandoned their homes as result of skirmishes between Federal forces occupying areas adjacent to town such as Gist Center northeast corner past present day Green Road/Old Military Highway (now I-465) east side where military stores were established; all this taking place within weeks prior to David Wells’ famous burning campaign starting October 15th 1861 which resulted in over twenty thousandacre burnings throughout central Indiana subsequent thereto culminating February 6th 1862 when Confederate forces opened up serious harassment operations throughout much southeastern Indiana resulting ultimately in General Lee withdrawing all but three hundred men from Fort Harrison southeast corner past present day Evansville Rd./US 40/I-465). In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order No. 965 providing for racial segregation within newly acquired states due largely then slave labor being used extensively on local farms primarily within Butler County - including Bedford - leading eventually eventually African Americans being admitted into government service beginning May 4th 1870 through gradual expansion throughout all Hoosier states following wave upon wave until reservations were established statewide following World War II ending with black Americans becoming fully integrated into society hereunder although some residual restrictions still continue today affecting blacks more generally than others since 1979 although recently efforts have been made variously herein notably via village meetings etc.)

Bedford is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bedford was founded in 1812 by Simon Kenton and others as an agricultural village on the Scioto River. The first permanent settler in Bedford was David Dunham who established a farm in 1815. In 1824, John Bede arrived from England with his wife and two children to start a new life in what would become Bedford. He built his home at the corner of First and Elm Streets, which still stands today. A year later he married Mary Trimble and started a family that would populate Bedford for many years to come. In 1836, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his Tennessee troops eastward into Butler County after capturing Fort Harrison during the Battle of Black Hawk Creek. When Forrest discovered that there were no Indian villages within reach of his forces he ordered all settlers west of Lebanon Road to leave their homes or face martial law until further notice. Many people chose to leave their homes rather than comply with this order; some even took matters into their own hands and burned down their dwellings while they still could before retreating back up Lebanon Road. In 1836-37, general company stores were opened throughout Butler County by Colonel James Mallowan who had been appointed Superintendent of Public Works by president Andrew Johnson following the removal of Governor Morton from office due to charges of bribery and corruption involving state contracts awarded through Morton’s agency.). One store located on Elm Street became known as “Mallowan’s Store” because its owner (Colonel James Mallowan) continued to operate it until 1865 when it was sold to J H Pinkerton for $5,000 cash ($7700 today). In 1840/41 Abraham Lincoln served as Township Clerk for Bedford Township which included parts of modern day Howard County including present day Clinton Township., After being elected twice as Mayor (1849-51 & 1861-63), Lincoln vacated his seat on the township board effective January 1st 1861 so that he may run for office again on an open ticket defeating incumbent Green Beret (Drayson) Silliman 3 times out of 4 contests Won decisively despite cheating allegations against him alleging that he derived most votes from political patronage appointments he received from powerful citizens thereby enabling him becoming one halfordained elector candidate without any physical evidence but only popular belief! At age 73 years old Abraham Lincoln died suddenly less than 2 months after being elected President 44 days later at Ford MansionHis funeral service took place at Trinity Episcopal Church where Reverend Ebenezer Cook officiated having earlier offered prayers for him prior to burial at Arlington National Cemetery afterwards!
