Bedford was founded in 1814 by General David Wilkinson and his family after they were forced out of their original home in what is now Delaware Township. The town was named for General Wilkinson's daughter, who had been born there two years earlier to Colonel John Bedford and Lady Jane Childs. In 1825, the state legislature designated Bedford as the county seat of Mayfield County; this designation lasted until 1828 when Fort Wayne became the county seat because it had more people. The town site lies just east of today's downtown area and was first developed into homesites along the riverbank between 1830 and 1840. Although there are no remains of any early settlers from Bedford other thanGeneral Wilkinson himself, many interesting items associated with that time period have been found throughout the community since its establishment including wagonloads of bricks used to build new churches in Indianapolis during that time period; three Revolutionary War cannons captured from British forces at Fort Dearborn near Chicago; an article about Indian Wars fought by Mayfield County residents under Captain James Carleton which ran in an Indianapolis paper dated October 15th, 1847; and a group of historic actors including Mrs William Hickey (a singer with vaudeville companies), Mr Harry Shearer (a comedian/actor),Mrs Emma Thompson (the wife of Senator Andrew Johnson)and Miss Carrie Nation performing "The Maple Leaf" at Madison Square Garden on December 16th 1903.]

By 1870, Bedford had become an important center for agriculture due to its location on two major river valleys: the Whitewater River Valley to the north andthe Ohio River Valley to the south. In 1898, Bedford became part of Hoosier Statehood when Indiana gained its statehood from United States v. Illinois. As part of Hoosier Statehood, it lost some autonomy but retained many features associated with traditional Hoosier culture such as a unicircle flagpole atop courthouse square andTheowais celebrated annual agricultural fair called "Festival Days." Since 2000, Bedford has been home to I-465 (the new National Highway System road), which has helped change how residents live and work around town; this has led to increased economic development opportunities for industries such as software development and metalworking; while also creating challenges for infrastructure connection including inadequate streetlights and potholes that can lead to fatal accidents or car theft among others
