Avon, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 5,392 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area and is the easternmost incorporated community in that area. The town was founded by Quakers in 1837 as a result of their missionary work in what is now Illinois. Avon's first post office opened on December 12, 1837. By 1860, it had grown to over 1,000 residents and included a school and a church. In 1868, the town became an independent city under the name of Terre Haute; however, it reverted to its original name after two years whenTerre Haute became one of 15 cities within Butler County that were annexed by Indianapolis in 1898 as part of the wave of consolidation that led to American suburbanization. In 1914-15, Avon hosted the World's Fair which featured many exhibits including an auto show and a water slide built from metal plates brought down from Niagara Falls. After the fair ended, much development occurred in Avon with new homes being constructed for people working near Indianapolis or for those commuting into downtown Indianapolis via car or bus. The William McKinley Presidential Library & Museum was built on State Road 36 along Main Street between Elmhurst Avenue and Roosevelt Road in 1916-17; it served as both a library and museum until it closed in 1984 due to budget cuts. In 1968-69 another major development took place when Avon High School replaced one of Terre Haute's older buildings; this gave rise to what is now known as "The Town Green". Other large projects during this time include construction of Interstate 465 (now US-12) just south of town at milepost 24; renovations/updates to I-465 eastbound between US-36 and Elmhurst Avenue; and additions/updates to Richardson Boulevard between Elmhurst Avenue and Roosevelt Road (now State Road 412). Inexplicably enough (or maybe not), most all these projects were cancelled or reworked exactly once each - leaving no evidence whatsoever that they ever got past planning stage!?!? How did such seemingly innovative infrastructure projects manage to go unchanged for so long? Some Possible Explanations: Maybe everyone who worked on them just didn't remember or care about them... Maybe there was some secret handshake they needed TO keep? Maybe nobody wanted anyone knowing how terrible their ideas actually are...? Or maybe somebody just forgot... but whatever happened to "Project X"?
