He built a log cabin near present-day Main Street and White River. By 1830, there were over 50 shops and businesses in avon including wagonmakers, carpenters, printers, milliners, jewelers and some 4 cotton ginners. In 1861, after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation made slavery illegal across most of America (except for Confederate states), many freedmen began moving into avon from other parts of Indiana Territory including Uniontown/New Albany/Posey Township as well as neighboring towns such as New Albany and Columbus Junction. Many new homes were also built during this time period primarily composed of logs with large teams helping carry them off the lot or driving them onto flatboats that took them downriver to points northward where they could be traded for goods coming down from Canada or Mexico City or even abroad! A store opened up on East Washington Street in 1865 which became known as "The Old Store". In 1870-71 an act sponsored by Representative James Hennepin called for $10 per capita taxes on all landowners within township limits; this caused much debate among citizens but ultimately resulted in increased production because farmers were able to sell their products more cheaply outside their own township boundaries! Manyavons residents went on to become prominent figures during various eras - such as Judge David Brewster who served two terms on the Harrison County Circuit Court (1892-1900) before becoming United States Ambassador to Russia (1906-1909); Mayor William Pirtle (1899-1901); Congressman Julius Vogel (1920-1924); Judge Harry Kappesberger (1945-1950) - all before he turned 80 years old! In 1923 local doctor JK Harker came up with a plan for cross country school buses which would allow children from different parts of town to attend school together without having to walk separate routes each morning or afternoon! This innovative idea soon became popular throughout the community & has been used ever since!
