The first settler in Avon was David French in 1817. The name "Avon" came from two words: AVER (Wichita) and on (Hendricks). In 1835, John Kinney started the first store in what is now Avon. In 1840, Hiram Dixon built a log cabin and named it "Dixon's Landing." In 1846, George Wickersham founded Jarrytown with his wife Fannie Ford and their son Isaac Wickersham Sr. They were the first people to own land in what is now Avon Township. In 1865, Jacob Hainer opened the first post office in what is now Avon Township. In 1870, John Tindal bought land adjacent to present day Schleicher Park for $5 per acre. He founded Tindal Farms which still stands today as one of the largest agricultural operations in central Illinois. 9/11/2001 marks 100 years since America's deadliest terrorist attack when planes crashed into Twin Towers and Pentagon killing 3000 people including 500 Americans living near Indianapolis
