In 1865, avocados were discovered growing in this area so renamed Schoolington Avenue became Avon Road to honor Hardin's donation. Avon saw its most dramatic growth during World War II when many businesses came to town to assist with war efforts such as munitions production or shipping materials overseas. Some of these businesses remain today including Bechtel Corporation, now UTC Aerospace Systems; Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Corporation; Rockwell Automation Inc.; Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company;and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company among others.
