Avon is a small town located in Morgan County, Indiana. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The first settlers in Avon were James and Nancy Putnam who arrived in 1814. They built a cabin on the west bank of the river and named their settlement after themselves, Avon. Other early settlers included John Putney, Sr., his wife Hannah, two sons John and James Putney, Nathaniel Goodrich (a pioneer postmaster), and four daughters: Sarah Goodrich born 1796; Dora Goodrich born 1800; Bathsheba Goodrich born 1802; and Lucy Ann Putnam born 1804. Avon’s first school was opened in 1827 by Rev. Daniel Smith. In 1865, it became a public school with Mrs. Cinthia Ayer as secretary/mistress until her death in 1880. In 1886, it became an all-male school with Drs. George Wickersham and Alfred Hinshaw as trustees/ principals until its closure in 1992 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Richard J. Morse *. A variety of businesses have been located here over the years including grocery stores (Fruitland Grocery & Supermarkets), printing plants (National Typographical Union), banks (First National Bank), gas stations (Chevron gasoline station) and more recently fitness studios (*Laughing Medicine). Avon has also become known for its annual Pumpkinfest which takes place during October every year downtown*!
