This saw was used to help owners aim their firearms at game in the area that is now known as Ball Township. In 1839, a man named Isaac Goldsmith erected a sawmill in what is now known as Goldsmithsville. This mill helped to produce shotguns and rifles for use by local farmers and hunters. By 1845, there were four gun sights located in Avon – one on Main Street, one off of High Street, one near the post office, and one on Willowbrook Road. In 1861, Avon became part of Logansport County when it was formed from parts of Johnson County. As part of this change, the county courthouse was moved from downtown to what is now called The Square on Market Street. In 1870-71, three more gun sights were added to the town - one on Green Lane west of Main Street; one east of Green Lane between Third and Fourth Streets; and another west of Fourth Street at Park Avenue. By 1890 there were ten gun sights located inAvon – six on Main Street (including the original settler's house), two off High Street (one within walking distance from most residents), two near Post Office on Willowbrook Road (two miles away), two on Park Ave., and one each at Green Lane W., 4th St., 3rd St., 2nd St., 1st St.. Avon is a town in Clark County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first person to settle in what is now Avon was Samuel French in 1785. He founded a trading post on the banks of the White River and named it after himself, AVON. French built a log cabin here and started a small farm which he sold to John Hanks in 1810. In that year, Hanks married Sarah King and moved into AVON from Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1814, AVON became one of five towns chartering themselves as the Town of Jeffersonville (later called Bloomington). In 1827, Jeffersonville changed its name to Avon after an donation by James Fenton III.. avon has been known for its cheese since 1876 when it was donated by Mr Henry Goudreau who also founded Glendora Cheese Company. The company continues today with three factories located in Bloomington-Normal, Avon and Montgomery Township.

Avon, Indiana is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Avon were fur traders from Quebec City in 1814 and 1815. They named it Pointe-à-Pitre (“headland point”), because a headland dominated the entrance to the current town site. In 1820, James Auld, an Englishman who had come to America as a trader, built a cabin near what is now downtown Avon on land he acquired from Pierre Elliott Trudeau, then Canada's Prime Minister and future first President of Canada. In 1827, John Crouse erected a log cabin on what is now North Main Street in downtownAvon and began trading with Indian tribes living along the Illinois River valley and its tributaries. By 1830, Crouse had built two more stores: one on State Street northwest of present day First Avenue and another on Third Street east of Present Day State Street. In 1830–31 American Fur Company trader John Fenton traveled through Indiana looking for land for his company to expand into western Pennsylvania beyond that already claimed by his Canadian colleague Alexander Macdonald and others associated with Canadan fur trade interests; he met with leaders of several Iroquois nations in this area during his journey; he also came across settlers living around what is now downtownAvon which he called "the new world." Fenton negotiated with various Native American groups regarding purchases of land northward to what are now Lake Michigan within Indian Territory – avowedly without any intent or expectation to settle these lands himself – but no purchase was made until after his death in 1835 when United States agent David Hunter discovered evidence that some members of an Iroquoise nation known as Shawnee had been purchasing land adjacent to modern Fort Wayne undercutting American Fur Company operations there; Hunter notified Congress accordingly and legislation authorizing Ulysses S. Grant's executive order establishing Fort Wayne were passed soon thereafter (August 20th). The following year saw continued growth at both stores due largely to local demand for goods brought by Americans traveling through India via steamboats carrying goods overland from points west including Detroit before improvements having arrived atAVON enabled direct boat transportation available particularly during winter months when ice impeded travel upstream past present day First Avenue towards Indiana Harbor - thus making possible increased trade opportunities between different parts of America - export/import traffic especially!
