After years of struggle, AVON regained some prosperity through several waves of economic development over recent decades culminating with its re-establishment as an urban center after being vacated by downtown Indianapolis in 2000 due to new development plans for that site.

A cotton gin was built here in 1870 and by 1875 it had become one of the largest cotton gins west of Chicago.
