Avon, Indiana is a small city in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 5,874 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Purdue University and Avon-Forney High School which are both located in the city limits. The name "Avon" comes from "Achille's heel", meaning a place where one can buy shoes to protect against footwear theft or damage during shipping. The city was founded on November 17, 1892 by residents of nearby Beech Grove and Greenfield Heights as a result of an agricultural depression caused by drought and overproduction from nearbyanthracite mines. The town acquired its current name on February 2, 1907 when it became part of Indianapolis through an act of the General Assembly passed that year which designated all towns within Indianapolis' municipal boundaries with one name (Avon being among them). In 1957, Avon-Forney High School was established in what had been Beech Grove Elementary School; before that it had been two schools together in Greenfield Heights called Springdale and Highland Park Schools. In 1966, Purdue University moved into its new Academic Village campus adjacent to downtown Avon; prior to that it had been located on Light Street east of College Avenue between First Street and Wabash Avenue. In 2006–2007 there were significant changes to the character of downtown as well as much renovation inside and outside the school buildings; overall construction cost $39 million dollars primarily funded by individual donations from citizens who provided matching funds for various aspects such as street paving, lighting Boulevard sidewalks/driveways etc.). Avon is a town in Addison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,646 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Addison County. The town was platted on December 15, 1836, by John Cranch and James Bogan. The first post office in Avon was established on January 10, 1840. The townsite was named for English commander Edward Vernon who had died in action during the War of 1812. Avon grew quickly due to its location near the then-new American River Bridge and the wagon roada main artery linking Ohio with Illinois and Indiana at that time. In 1850, Avon became one of four towns consolidated into the new village of Terre Haute; it retained its own government until it merged with neighboring Indianapolis on April 24, 1907. In 1892–1893, avon's elementary school superintendent Mrsilling Aiken designed and built a $2 million addition to her home on Main Street which served as both schoolhouse and administrative headquarters for all six towns in Addison County including Terre Haute when that consolidation took place. That building remains today as part of courthouse square within city limits of Terre Haute (see photo). In 1915 local businessman Alfred Pabst donated land adjacent to his manufacturing plant on East Washington Street for use as a public library; construction began in 1916 but only ended up completed after Pabst's death in 1927 due to health problems related to heavy industry growth around him at that time (the first branch opened in May 1928). At first there were just 12 shelves but by 1931 there were over 350 titles plus an extensive collection of rare books along with an audiovisual center/theater which continues operations today (see photo). By 1945Avon had outgrown its original library facilities so a new wing was added featuring such features as air conditioning and telecommunications capabilities allowing it to be used both as a library serving residents across town as well as providing access to materials from all over southern Indiana while also accommodating overflow from other larger area libraries since TerreHaute still functioned more like an independently-operated village than a single entity with multiple branches throughout town proper even though all but one branch closed by 2006 having been supplanted by much larger structure inside city limits instead.) In 1954 another wing was added housing another telephone system addition along with two large auditoriums/libraries used for performances Arts & crafts shows dances etc... avon formally became “Avondale” on June 14th 1960 whenTerre Haute incorporated becoming one municipality composed entirely of Avondale Township while annexing portions of neighboring Harrison Township form what would become known collectively as “Addison Township” following approval by referendum process conducted pursuant to Article VII section 3(a) OF THE INDEPENDENT CITY CODE OF INDIANAPOLIS . Upon incorporation “avondale” ceased being an alternate name commonly given official community institutions hereinunder nickname adopted exclusively theretofore referring thereto
