On July 5 of that year, Avon's incorporation as a municipality was accepted by the state of Indiana with only one vote against it because two other towns in central Indiana - Portageville and Lebanon - also petitioned for incorporation into the new city limits. The town continued to grow over time due to its strategic location between two major railroad lines - the Indianapolis & Michigan Line (now Interstate 65) and the Louisville & Nashville Line (now Kentucky Route 32). With its growing population came an increased demand for housing, which led to the construction of many homes throughout downtown Avon during this time period. By 1960, when Plymouth Music Hall opened its doors for business as one of downtown's most popular attractions,Avon had reached its peak as an agricultural center with farms covering nearly all of southcentralIndiana . But despite these successes over the years (and some controversy surrounding development projects such as planned grain elevates), growth finally slowed beginning in 2000 following changes in local government composition which resulted in more suburban growth around town center while less attention was paid to traditional agriculture within town limits
