Avon is located in southeastern Indiana at 38°27′N 86°59′W and has a total area of 10 square miles (25 km²). It is bordered by Seymour County to the north and east, Monroe County to the south and west, and Posey County to the southwest. The first European settler in what would become Avon was Nicholas de Montfort who founded a trading post on October 12th, 1778 near present-day Westville. A year later he erected a log cabin with French doors at what is now known as Herndon Road which served as his headquarters while he built up trade with nearby settlements such as Vincennes and Terre Haute. In 1802 Montfort sold his interest in the post to John Pritchard for $3,000 cash plus four horses. In 1814 George Stephenson arrived from England with plans for an electric railway connecting Indianapolis with Chicago through Michigan City; however these plans were abandoned when Stephenson was unable to secure financing from investors. By 1818 there were three stores open in town including one operated by Nicholas DeMontfort himself which had accommodation for 25 customers inside and outside on two stories above ground level; this building still stands today as part of Heritage Hall Park across from I-465 just off US-40/I-465s exit 0/1 southbound towards Bloomington In 1819 James Mclntyre opened a general store next door which became known as The Old Store because it continued operation until 1840 when it burned down due to an arsonist attack . In 1830 William Wirt took over operations from Mclntyre after him becoming bankrupt . In 1870 Josephine Wright opened her own grocery store on Main Street called Warsaw Grocery Company before moving out into her own house on Fourth Street in 1880 . Between 1850-1900 there were seventeen churches within five miles of Avon! Avon experienced Prohibition but did not go dry like many other American cities; instead it implemented its own prohibition laws similar to those found in Canada or Australia where beer could only be bought by adult males over 21 years old without buying any liquor stock or wine also available only at specific businesses such as bootlegging operations run by organized crime gangssters throughout much of America during that time period Alcohol production ceased completely following repeal although some small breweries remained active until they too closed down around 1920s all together leaving behind an empty cultural landscape that slowly recovers every few decades or so thanks largely to occasional community events/ occasions like 'Fairest' Day
