Auburn, Indiana is a small town in the northern part of the state of Indiana. It is located on the right bank of the Wabash River, about 12 miles south-southwest of Terre Haute and 18 miles northwest of Lafayette. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. The first person to live in Auburn was David Hutton in 1810. There were three churches in Auburn when it was platted: Methodist (1814), Presbyterian (1820), and Baptist (1825). In 1827, John Fenton erected a log cabin on what is now State Street. The first school in Auburn was built on this site by teacher James C. Morehead in 1830. In 1831, Andrew Gadsden organized a wagon road from Terre Haute to Lafayette and built a store at what is now Main Street. A post office called Auburn was established here in 1834. In 1840, two brothers named Pemberton bought the land for $2 per acre from Daniel Boone Jr.. They began to build an interesting gristmill which still stands today on Mill Road near State Street. The mill continued to be used until 1954 when it became part of Purdue University’s Old West campus architecture programs collection and has been open as an exhibit since then. In 1860, Adam Beall founded Beall & Potter grocery store at what is now Main Street and State Avenue; this store remains one of the oldest stores within reach of downtown Auburn today! On October 5th 1888, Albion Wagon Works started manufacturing wagons out of local lumber at their factory on Depot Square just east of Center Boulevard today known as Albion Wagon Works Museum!
