The history of Auburn began with two brothers who started a paper mill in 1872. Papermaking was an important industry in Auburn at the time and it supplied both local and national papers with high quality paper products. Over time other businesses joined the paper mill including a grocery store and hardware store which helped support the operations of the mill until it closed in 1966. In 1907 residents of Auburn voted to create their own city government effectiveJanuary 1st 1907 This city government provided for municipal services such as education; police protection; fire protection; water supply; trash collection; streetlight installation; recreation purposes such as playscapes and pool games; . The first mayor was Wm Henson In 1957 when City Council changed its name to Auburn City Government In 1969 Mayor Harry Guthrie established Park District #2 which included portions of today's downtown area

In 1886 the first use of electricity in Posey County was reported when an experimental electric light bulb was lit at Auburn’s opera house using two bags filled with coal oilshot pellets set off by hand dynamite detonating them near the building’s foundation
