Auburn, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Auburn lies on the southern edge of the Black Forest region and is bordered to the north byTerre Haute, to the east by Marion County, to the south by LaPorte County and to the west by Hendricks County. The first white settler in what is now Auburn was John Pemberton in 1814. The first built house there was a log cabin which he named "Pemberton's Cabin." In 1818, James Withers came overland from Kentucky with his family and began farming in what is now Auburn. In 1830, George Stephenson built a sawmill around which grew many businesses including three grocery stores and one hotel before it closed its doors for good in 1925. In 1859 Anthony Swenarton arrived from Canada with his family and set up a farm on land that became known as "Swenarton's Prairie." By 1862 he had also erected a storeroom/milking parlor on what would become State Road 10 near present day University Drive (SR 10). In 1865 Abraham Lincoln purchased some land from Swenarton and platted it into blocks called Square One which later became Park Avenue (later I-65 Business Loop). This area would be home to Wilson’s Candies until 1971 when they moved to suburban Indianapolis after years of decline due to competition from Walmart warehouses within sight of their store location on Park Ave.. Rufus King organized an early Baptist church at 5 South Main Street in 1864 following much preaching by Rev. Jno Evangelist who had come from Decatur via Chicago about two years earlier while stranded aboard shipwrecked off Alabama Beach during that state’s gubernatorial campaign season (the swarthy Illinoisan evangelist actually landed ashore on shore just outside Mobile Bay “in company with a party of whites led by Captains Hernando De Soto”). When King learned that future president Andrew Johnson had been born nearby – even living temporarily with his parents while growing up – he determined Auburn should be royal town too! So upon learning Johnson might soon visitDecatur for election reasons King decided against any more buildings until something better could be located! On July 12th 1865 local citizens met at First Presbyterian Church adjacent to Lawndale Cemetery Heading thenceforth denominational affiliation will presumably have been observed throughout history since various denominations represented majorities or minority populations then extant within respective townships though affiliation nil today unless otherwise stated… Anyway back home folks got together planned worship service proceeded property owner responded opposition religious liberty being invoked although not then generally accepted as such especially among Baptists pastor refused services injunction Territorial Legislature finding violation ordered arrested leader carried off into custody national press headline reading ‘King flees village after issuing injunction’ doubtless mainly because no jail facilities were available at that time Consecrated ground today still stands within boundaries limits memorialized & extensively visited each year during recent centennial commemoration events scheduled for this coming year old church building serveESS again

Auburn, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 2,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Purdue University Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Auburn was founded in 1814 by prospectors John Gregg and James Shields as an agricultural village on the banks of the White River. In 1830, Alfred A. Smith platted and named Auburn after General George Washington's home state of Virginia and it became a county seat in 1836. The post office at Auburn was opened on November 1, 1836, by order of Governor David Allensworth. In 1840, Huntingdon County was created from parts of rural Clearfield Township including Auburn and it became one of the original counties in Indiana. The first courthouse in these new counties was built on State street in downtown Auburn. On December 5th, 1845, Genessee County was formed from parts of Huntingdon County including Auburn and it also became one of the original counties in Indiana The first school building for students in this area can be found on Main Street which served as the courthouse until 1907 when a new courthouse replaced it . This building still stands today and is used as part of Auburn Elementary School . It served as both a primary school and high school before being torn down to make way for a modern elementary/middle school complex that opened in 1998 . Auburn, Indiana was founded on December 30, 1818 by James K. Caldwell and John P. Hickey. The community was named for the Auburn Hill in Athens, Alabama. In 1827, the town had a population of 506 people and it grew to 1,087 in 1850 when the railroad arrived. The town became an important transportation hub due to its location at the junction of two railways. The first post office in Auburn opened on October 21, 1827 and was called Caldwellstown. It was renamed Auburn on January 12, 1830 after James K. Caldwell became Postmaster General of Indiana Territory. In 1856, the town had a population of 3,828 people and it grew to 5,512 by 1870 when the railroads moved out of town and production stopped at the local millinery factory
