There are also several small businesses including A&P Grocery Store (established 1924), Ford's dealership (opened 1936), Mrs.'s Cookies & Coffee Shop (established 1922), Presbyterian church nursery (founded 1923) and Auburn United Methodist Church (. Built 1909).

Auburn was originally part of the Vandalia Township (now Union Township) in LaPorte County. In 1858, it became part of Terre Haute County. On March 15, 1912, Auburn became a town charter with a population of 2,211 people. It had 3 newspapers: the Auburn News-Gazette, the Auburn Daily Herald and the Mount Pleasant Republican. The largest employer in town is State Farm Mutual Insurance Company which has its headquarters on Main Street across from the Town Hall. Other primary employers include American Legion Post #2 on Park Avenue and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company on Court Street; both companies are located about two miles south of town on United States 61 near Terre Haute Airport.
