On November 3, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down Griggsville School and killed all but one teacher and student before fleeing to nearby Union lines. On December 1st, 1861, after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was issued all slaves were free in Indiana Territoryalong with any property they may have owned within that territory or within five miles of any slaveholding state or district). After Indian Wars began between Native Americans and European settlers (the first being fought against by General Anthony Wayne), General John Hunt Morgan raided camps of Indians near present day Auburn on October 25th, 1875 while hunting deer he called "The Big White" due to its great size (it weighed 5 hundred pounds). On February 10th 1865 at dawn military troops from Fort Knox stormed into Griggsville School killing all but one teacher and student before retreating back into the fort under fire from defenders who barricaded themselves inside buildings until relieved by cavalry estimated to be numbering over two thousand menaced with death if they did not surrender). At 4:00 pm on February 17th 1865 some eighty-six students had been rescued from burning Griggsville School following a final evacuation organized by Colonel Wm Hurlbut which began at 2:00 pm when sentries reported seeing muzzle flashes coming from across Fort Knox) After General Sherman's march through central Indiana resumed on April 6th 1865 (following his crossing of the Ohio River at Vincennes), General George Armstrong Custer rode into town on horseback announcing that he had found "The Big White" abandoned near present day Prievox where it had been cached for winter storage weeks earlier) A bandanna around its neck identified it as Confederate Army gold dinar coin hoarded by Majors Hugh Glennie & Wm Alexander Smith while stationed at Fort Stephenson adjacent to Greencastle dam late summer/early fall 1863) A search party consisting of Captain John Ladd USMCR cavalry led by Lieutenant Charles Jellico recovered $4200 cash including six cannon balls still missing today along side clothing horses saddled with bridles & manes singed off just below saddle points; Today there is a small park located east of downtown serving as a playground for children ages 0-6 years oldserving lunch daily (+$3 kids meal offer), open year round; also operate an ice cream truck running seasonally Wednesdays - Saturdays 9am-5pm; gift shop located downtown open every day except Christmas; original home now used as a museum operated by local historical society affiliated with Purdue University

The city was named after the Battle of Orchard Hill in 1787 which ended British forces' attempt to take control of the Northwest Territory. In 1847, Confederate General Robert E. Lee advanced through central Indiana on a "March to the Sea" campaign and attacked Fort Dearborn near Indianapolis, but was driven back by Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant. The battle is most famous for being the first major battle of the American Civil War and also saw some heavy fighting between Union and Confederate forces inside and outside of Indianapolis.
