There are many references to firearms and gunowners in the history of Auburn, Indiana. The first reference to a firearm being used in the town was in 1834 when a man named De Witt filed a trespass complaint against James Hawks for firing his rifle at a bird. In 1837, John Witherspoon donated five shotguns to the town. In 1840, the first shot was fired from an artillery piece located on the east side of town. On July 1, 1846, General Sherman's march through central Indiana left General George Armstrong's division retreating behind him and entered Indianapolis with its baggage trains laden with arms and ammunition. The news of this event ignited public indignation across the state and throughout much of America. This led to calls for disarmament among some portions of society while others called for arms prohibitionism. When Sherman arrived in Auburn on July 7 he discovered that all but two shotguns had been confiscated by local authorities. It is not clear how or when these guns were redistributed but they are most likely auctioned off or given away as prizes during various events such as fairs or carnivals sponsored by local businesses during this time period

In 2008, Avery Corporation announced that it would locate its corporate headquarters there from its current location in South Bend. In 2009, Avery announced plans to construct a $245 million facility known as "The Factory". The factory will be used to produce vehicles for Ford Motor Company and other automakers. The project is expected to create over 1,000 jobs during its construction phase and up to 2,500 jobs after it is completedometime between 2020 and 2024. The Village Board approved plans for the factory on November 15th 2009 unanimously vote with no abstentions; this marked only first time such approval had been given without any discussion or debate taking place within Village Hall precincts prior thereto!
