Auburn is located on the east side of Mount Carmel in southeastern Indiana, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Terre Haute and 10 miles (16 km) north of Noblesville. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Auburn in 1814. They built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Auburn." The first post office was established in 1825 and was called "Newburgh." In 1837, an Act of Congress created the Township of Auburn to contain all of present-day Auburndale County. On July 1, 1840, parts of Johnson Township were added to Auburn as well. By 1845, most residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere because of Indian wars fought nearby by the Shawnee and Potawatomi nations. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Pemberton ordered his forces to cross into Union territory from central Illinois without battle and attack Indianapolis; this move caused many people in surrounding counties to flee to downtown Indianapolis or go into hiding. Many men from Auburn enlisted in Pemberton's army and helped win key battles such as Second Battle Of Bull Run near Fort Wayne and Third Battle Of Bull Run near Evansville before being mustered out at Camp Chase on October 15th near Richmond Virginia just days after Abraham Lincoln was sworn into office as President on November 6th 1861. During World War I many farms were destroyed by German bombers while other farmers joined the war effort through Relief Efforts leading up to Victory In Europe which included producing food for troops fighting abroad including supplying Patton's Third Army with bunker cheese that gave them good morale during their invasion across France After World War II many people returned home including some who had served in Japan or Korea where they found new opportunities After more than fifty years since its incorporation as a town/village/township under one name or another it has finally been given its current name: "Auburn"
