Auburn, Indiana is a small town in the US state ofIndiana. The population was 7,468 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1837 by Methodist missionaries as a post office named Auburn on the Mississippian River. In 1841 it became a village and was renamed Auburn after General James K. Polk's victory in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The name change came about because of disagreements over whether to use "Auburn" or "Aurum". In 1907, Auburn incorporated as a city and remains an unincorporated community today. The city has experienced rapid growth since then, with its population reaching 1,500 by 2000 and 3,000 by 2010. The economy is based primarily on service industry jobs including health care and education services; however, some manufacturing operations still exist in the town. In recent years there have been efforts to revive downtown Auburn as an attraction for visitors along with plans to improve transportation options so that everyone can easily get around without having to leave their homes. There are also plans underway to create more parkland within the city limits and increase access to cultural attractions like art museums and symphony orchestras.

Auburn, Indiana is a small town in Wayne County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Auburn was founded by John and Anna (Lanier) Auburn on December 5, 1814. The first settler in the community was Isaac Lanier. Auburn became an incorporated village on January 3, 1912. The name of the town came from a family of Aubursts who were located in what is now Georgia and Ohio. John Auburn's great-grandfather had come to America from England in 1795 and his grandson, also named John Auburn, returned to America with his parents and siblings in 1815. He married Rebecca Lanier and they lived near Portsmouth, New Hampshire before coming to Indiana where he started a lumber business. In 1827 he sold his lumber business to James Hargrave and moved to Auburn where he died three years later on April 14th 1830 aged 73 years old. The map below shows the location of Auburn as it appeared when it became an incorporated village: In 1911 the population of Auburn was 1,815 while its size ranged from just over 100 people in 1915 to 2195 when it annexed neighboring Riverside Township on November 15th 1959 having a total population of 393 residents! In 1907 the school system for all grades was organized with Mrs Mabel Gadsden serving as Superintendent; classes began September 6th 1908 with thirty students! There were twelve teachers which included Mrs Gadsden herself! On October 9th 1909 Mrs Gadsden resigned due to ill health but her successor Mrs Emma Fenton served until 1916 when she too resigned due to ill health! In 1917 Rev A W Goodwin officiated at First Baptist Church’s dedication services for Pastor J C Hardman who had been appointed pastor two months earlier! Also that year post office opened with Mr S B Sellers Postmaster General having joined forces with Mr Charles Beal prior thereto! In 1920 there were 295 residents while its size ranged from just over 150 people in 1925-1930 inclusive; however by 1930 only 151 residents remained!!! By 1931 only 362 residents remained!!! With so few people living there during these Depression years most likely because many abandoned town or left because of social conscience reasons such as communists being active or race riots taking place!! It should be noted that during this time period no schools/houseschooling existed other than one private home which accepted students free!!!! This last fact means that very little if any history takes place here about our early pioneers & settlers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Auburn, Indiana was founded in 1817 by theetting of a group of men led by Captain John P. Goodrich. The village site was chosen because it offered a good location for farming and trading. In 1830, the town of Auburn was platted and named after President James K. Polk, who had helped found the United States during the Mexican-American War. The first courthouse in Auburn was built in 1832. In 1835, Congressman James Witherspoon recommended that the government build a school in Auburn to help educate Native Americans living near the town. The school opened in 1836 and lasted until 1865 when it closed due to financial problems. In 1861, Confederate General William Taney arrived at Auburn with 1,500 soldiers to find that most of its residents were Unionists and surrender the town withoutBattle. After Confederate forces retreated from Indianapolis on April 12th, 1865, they burned all of Auburn as an act of humiliation
