Auburn, Indiana is a small city in the northern part of the U.S. state of Indiana. It is located on the south bank of the White River, about 16 miles (25 km) east of Indianapolis and about 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of Louisville. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Auburn is one of two cities in Howard County; the other is Terre Haute. The first permanent settler in what became Auburn was David Morehead, who arrived in 1814 and named it for his friend and mentor General Andrew Jackson. In 1827, General James Kenedy donated land to establish a town here which he called Auburn after himself and peach orchards were developed nearby by local farmers beginning in 1828. A post office called Auburn was established in 1830, and remained operational until 1907. In 1836, John Sibley built a log cabin near present-day downtown Auburn on land donated by General Kenedy as part of a system to encourage settlement around this area by inducements such as timber concessions and payments for water rights. This village grew rapidly during the 1840s with many new homes being built along White River Boulevard (now State Road 32). The town's first school was erected in 1840 on an existing lot near Main Street/Upper White River Bridge over the river just west of today's downtown core where current School No./ Sixth Avenue sits today.. In 1850, when Indian Territory was created within Indiana following Indian Removal, Auburn had become one of its largest towns with 6500 residents according to US Census records filed that year! However only 2% Of Indians living within boundaries defined as “Auburn” actually lived there; most lived either at Peebles or Greenwood Village northwest of town center where Act No./ Township plat #4 had been designated for them! Many local boys & girls did not want to leave their home villages & return to live among white people so they enlisted into military service instead 1st battalion 5th regiment IndIAN LAND WARRIORS from age 17-21 years old back then! After some very harsh winter conditions ended with good crops we returned home healthy & contented under Gen JF McCORD’s command 1st Battalion 5th Regiment IndIAN LAND WARRIORS

Auburn, Indiana was founded in 1824 by George Washington Carver. The town was named after the Auburn County seat of Terre Haute,Indiana. In 1829, the Hammonds purchased land in the town and built a sawmill. The mill continued to operate until it was destroyed by a fire in 1890. In 1908, the town became a part of Terre Haute, Indiana and lost its autonomy.
