By 1870, Anderson had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves escape from slavery in nearby Kentucky. In 1881, Anderson became one of twenty-six townships incorporated into Henry County. John Anderson's settlement near present-day Anderson was first called Fort Wayne (later renamed Indianapolis). When he arrived in 1821, Fort Wayne was little more than a dirt fort reached by way of a long journey over difficult terrain from what is now northeast Michigan. By 1830, however, Fort Wayne had been moved upriver to what is now downtown Indianapolis so that it could serve as both trade center and military garrison during Indian War conflicts with neighboring Kentucky. As early as 1829 John Anderson had begun building his own log cabin on site – this one still stands today within walking distance of the modern city limits – serving as homebase for his family and their farm animals until he erected his first schoolhouse in1840. Anderson was founded by Captain John Anderson in 1795. The town grew rapidly and by 1810 had a population of 1,500. In 1818, the United States Congress created the County of Anderson as an area for settlement. The first settlers arrived in 1820 and within two years, Anderson had a population of 2,000 people. By 1830, the county had 10 settlements with a total population of 20 families. By 1840, there were 50 dwellings and a population of 350 people. In 1870, the number of residents had increased to 1,800 and by 1880 it was 2,500 people. A new courthouse was constructed in 1887 and continued to be used until 1907 when it was replaced by the present building.
