Anderson is a small town in central Indiana, located along the Wabash River. The population was 7,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Kokomo, IN-2007 Micropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Anderson was platted on November 15, 1824 by James Green and others under the name of South Bend. The name was changed to Anderson on December 2, 1827 when a post office called "Anderson" was established in that community. On October 15, 1830, it became one of several towns in what is now McLean County to secede from Vermillion County over religious differences. The original town site lay just east of present-day downtown Anderson. In 1834, Captain Ziegler constructed a ferry across the Wabash River for transportation between Anderson and Terre Haute; this Ferry landing is now known as Ziegler's Landing Park south of downtown Anderson. In 1840, Driggs & Hanks built a gristmill on current day State Road 9 which would become one of the first commercial mills in central Indiana. A new courthouse and jail were also erected in this time frame; both are still extant today and can be seen from Main Street inside the old courthouse lobby area (now used as an event space). The early 1800s saw some significant growth in central Indiana due to Boomtown theory – i.e., urbanization caused by large waves of immigrants settling near busy trade routes or new manufacturing plants with their attendant jobs and businesses creating demand for goods coming downriver from Illinois or Michiganthus stimulating economic development adjacent to these cities/towns resulting in increased population density around these centers allocating more land for farming purposes followed by residential building developments increasing access to water supplies needed for irrigation while enabling larger families to purchase lots nearer river mouths whence they could collect fresh fish during summer months leading up to major exports such as cornmeal etc.; thus forming what later became known as "the agricultural frontier." This pattern continued into subsequent decades with numerous villages/towns developing alongside larger ones throughout much of Northwestern Indiana becoming industrial areas producing goods needed by growing metropolitan areas including Chicago (then Illinois), Indianapolis (then Independencia), Detroit (then Michilimackinac), Cleveland (now Cuyahoga Falls) among others until finally most rural portions within Cook County following corridor growth patterns similar to those experienced throughout much Midwest America during this period resulting in decreasing farmland acreage although many farmsteads remain well preserved albeit often unoccupied because their occupants have relocated elsewhere since then; thus continuing an historic pattern whereby farmlands have been converted into housing estates primarily affecting southern Ontario counties bordering Ohio but also parts of Iowa and Wisconsin particularly along Interstate 90 near Minneapolis.)Today's Anderson is founded upon its remote location wedged between limestone hills nestled within Farmington Hills Township on its eastern edge whileTerre Haute lies immediately southwest and Kokomo lies west across the Wabash River oppositeon its eastern shorelines making it difficult if not impossible for either city’s residents annexation without first acquiring tribal status thereby forfeiting their right to vote plus overlapping services popularly rendered through jointly operated schools municipal court system 911 fire department ambulance service libraries park district library
