Anderson is a town located in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, there were 4,851 people living in Anderson. The town was founded in 1881 by Irish immigrants who named it after Lieutenant Colonel John Anderson who fought against the Seminole Indian Tribe in 1818. In 1924, Anderson incorporated as a village and lost its independent status. It regained this right to become an incorporated municipality on November 3rd, 2002 when all of Kosciusko County became one city with the name of Anderson. The town was platted on November 7, 1836, by John Anderson and James Brouncker. On July 1, 1841, it became one of the towns in Daviess County when it was included within the newly formed county. The first post office in Anderson was established on February 14, 1840. The community grew rapidly due to its strategic location near three railroad lines: the Indianapolis & Louisville Railroad (now part of Union Pacific), the Crawford Road Railway (later part of Conrail), and the Chicago & Northwestern Railway (C&N). By 1870, Anderson had a hotel and two stores. In 1872–73, visiting Canadian geologist Jock Young discovered gold deposits at Fillmore Creek; this led to increased activity in Anderson throughout the 1870s and 1880s. In 1901–02, local farmers Averell Harriman and Elisha Ketchum donated land for what would become McCormick Field State Park; this helped spur growth around that time as people came to enjoy nature close by. In 1923–24, construction began on what would become Stroud-Wilson Air Force Base; this contributed significantly to development around that time as well. Today, Anderson remains an agricultural center with several thousand residents who rely on agriculture for their income – including corn production which accounts for over 60% of total economic output hereabouts. Manufacturing activities are also prevalent here – many jobs are related to transportation or parts manufacturing such as cars or trucks. The community is home to numerous cultural attractions including an art museum and a library/museum combo known as "The Gallery."
