Gun targets have been a part of the Anderson community for over ninety years. The first target was erected in 1912, and the current facility was built in 1978. The target center is open to the public every day from 9:00am to 4:00pm. It serves as a popular spot for shooting games, competitions, and other activities. The history of gun targets can be traced back to 1892 when P.E. Hennessey established his business at 319 S Main Street in Anderson. He began making targets out of replica cannons that he had purchased from Europe. His targets were used by citizens and military officers alike to practice marksmanship skills during training exercises. In 1912, A C Carlson opened a small store on Fourth Street in Anderson that became known as the “Cannon Store” due to its stock of cannon targets. This store was among the earliest businesses in town that soldTarget firearms and ammunition. In 1937, John Linneman opened his owngun shop on Fifth Street within walking distance of the Cannon Store. Linneman soon became well-known throughoutAnderson for his high-quality target guns and ammo products. In 1978,the old Cannon Store building was replaced by a new structure that now houses both the Target Center andLinneman's Gun Shop adjacent to it on Sixth Avenue in Anderson proper! In addition to serving as an excellent place for shooting games, competitions,and other activities at the Target Center, this building also doubles as a museum dedicatedto firearm history!

Anderson was founded in 1824 by James Anderson. The city was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1870 during the Indian Wars. In 1876, Anderson became the capital of Indiana and the city seat. The first courthouse in Anderson was built in 1875. The city's first school was built in 1887. In 1911, Anderson became a state capital and the city seat of Allen County. In 1933, Anderson become an independent city and retains its current name as such today.

The town began as a farmers' market and post office, but it soon became an agricultural center with cranberry bushes, cornstalks, and other crops being grown hereabouts. In 1952-1953 when Indianapolis experienced its worst flood ever during floods caused by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Dale - this was also when Anderson had its most growth with new homes popping up all over town due to high demand for housing during those years amongst residents of other portions of Terre Haute following similar flooding disasters elsewhere throughout that year throughout much of central Indiana; many people decided to move away from their smaller hometowns because they felt they were not getting their fair share during these times financially speaking due to economic nationwide changes at that time; however some chose to stay behind in their favorite community even though they may have lost jobs or seen prices increase recently (due largely to global recession). Anderson has continued growing slowly through the years despite facing many challenges like arson fires in recent years (one such fire happened right near where JROTC used to be located), however overall it has held strong against changing times while still maintaining its unique character which makes it one of my favorite places I have ever lived!
