Zion, Illinois is a small town in the Kane County, Illinois area. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. Zion is located on the border of Kane County and Allen County. It is about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of Chicago. The land that now makes up Zion was first sold to settlers in 1817 by Daniel Boone, who named it after his biblical hometown of Bethany in Galilee. In 1824, when Illinois became a state, Zion was given to the newly formed county of Kane by General Joseph Whitfield as part of what would become known as the Whitfield Purchase. The community's name derives from Mount Carmel, which lies just east of Zion proper and was where John Wesley preached his famous sermon "A Sermon on Mount Carmel". In 1857, when Shaheen Hoods bought some tracts in what is now Zion from a group of Methodist Baptists for $2 per acre ($40 today), he knew that he had found an ideal location for a religious community: close to the city but separated from it by rolling hills and deep forests. By 1870, Hoods' colony had grown to include 1,500 people; by 1888 it had increased to 3,000 residents—all Methodists—and reached its peak population size in 1912 with 6,000 people living there. However, during World War I many residents left for military service because they believed that war would solve all their problems; many returned once hostilities ended but others continued to live there until they were evacuated or absorbed into other local communities before the end of 1920. In 1938–39 members of the Quaker Oats Company organized a meeting at which they proposed building an outdoor dining pavilion on Meeting House Hill so that more people could come and eat without having to go outside; this led to the erection in 1939–40 of what is now called "the Oaks" restaurant/cafeteria complex (now known asQuadrangle). Rapid growth during World War II led eventually to overcrowding inside Meeting House Hill itself and pressure from government planners for more space resulted in plans for an expanded parkland adjacent to Church Street between Summit Avenue and Addison Avenue being implemented only after much public outcry; this ultimately led to evicting most remaining residents from both buildings in 1949 following construction crews' discovery that two large underground reservoirs lay beneath both structures – one intended solely as water storage while another – suspected also housing weapons – had been used as barracks during wartime (see also: "The evacuation crisis at Zion"). On Christmas Eve, 1847, an organization called the First Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was organized in Zion, Illinois. The church was originally built on the site of a previous Baptist church that had been destroyed in a fire. The new church was dedicated on December 24th, 1847. Zion is located about 25 miles north of Chicago on I-355.
