The Zion firearms case is one of the most famous in American history. On May 10, 1968, a group of gunmen stormed and burned down the building housing the Illinois State Police Headquarters in Zion, Illinois. The suspects were two white supremacists who had earlier killed three people at a nearby convenience store. The gunman who committed this heinous crime was James Earl Ray, Jr., an individual known for violent crimes including robbery and murder. He had recently been released from prison after serving time for a prior shooting spree that left four people dead. After his release, Ray began to make contact with white supremacists online and plotted to carry out a series of attacks against black civilians. On May 10th, 1968, the Illinois State Police Headquarters was targeted because it was home to African Americans working within the organization. This attack was carried out by two white supremacists-- James Earl Ray Jr., and Melvin Godfrey-- both of whom were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The event has come to be known as "the Zion fire."
